Moldova posts trade deficit with Russia

RBC, 06.12.2007, Moscow 09:30:37.Moldova's trade deficit with Russia broadened by 23.4 percent to $193.7m between January and October 2007 compared to the same period a year earlier, the republic's National Statistics Bureau told RBC. According to the agency, which does not take into account foreign countries' trade with companies within the disputed Transnistrian region that are not registered in Moldova, the republic's exports to Russia increased 20.9 percent to $185.2m, while imports of Russian goods to Moldova grew 22.1 percent to $378.9m. Russia's share in Moldovan exports has shrunk from 18.8 to 17.4 percent, while its share in imports fell from 14.7 to 13.1 percent. In 2006, Moldova's trade deficit with Russia stood at $235m against a $79.6m surplus a year earlier.

The decrease in Moldova's exports to Russia can be attributed to the latter's bans on the supply of Moldovan wine, grains, and meat, while the increase in Russia's exports to Moldova is traced to higher natural gas prices.
